Week 2 of the finals! This week is a quiet one, with just the two games on, kicking off with Hawthorn v. Melbourne at the MCG.
But this isn’t the first time that these two have met in the finals of course. It’s not even the first time that they’ve played a final against each other on September 14! On September 14, 1957, at the MCG, Melbourne (who had finished the season at the top of the ladder) faced off against Hawthorn (who had finished 3rd) in week two of the finals, which was a Preliminary Final. This was Hawthorn’s first finals appearance in the VFL era.
In 1957 there was a top 4, consisting of Melbourne, Essendon, Hawthorn and Carlton. The first week of the finals consisted of 1v2 and 3v4, in two Semi Finals. The winner of 1v2 went straight through to the Grand Final, while the loser went on to play the winner of 3v4 (in the Preliminary Final). The loser of 3v4 was straight out of the finals.
Will we see a repeat of this finals success by Melbourne this week? Only time will tell! But we hope everyone has their viewing positions set, and their emotions in check!
barrack well all!
