Finals Week 1, 2018

Spectators at a football match between Port Adelaide and Sturt, c1923, PRG 280/1/41/116, State Library of South Australia

Being compliant footy supporters we diligently observed the end of season bye last week. And even though our teams are no longer taking part, we’re looking forward to being excited spectators this week.

We think there will probably be quite a few people at the games this weekend – possibly more so than at a Canberra Australian Rules Football final in 1926.

In looking for historical precedents, the crowds might look more like this photograph taken at the 1922 Grand Final between Norwood and West Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.

For those who managed to get tickets to see their teams play this weekend – congratulations and enjoy the game!
